May 1, International Commie Camera Day
March 14, 2009
Another date to mark on your calendars is the first of May better known as May Day, Transcontinental Up With Bolsheviks Day, So That’s What They Do For Fun in North Korea Day, Beltaine, Let’s All Go Naked And Lay In A Great Big Pile Day, and now International Commie Camera Day for people who like the strong snort of masochism with their photography.
On May 1, grab your camera which should have been manufacturered in a communist nation (which includes the Chinese made Seagull) and go out and put a couple of rolls through it. Share. And Enjoy.
Let the world know that a complete lack of quality control in manufacturing is not enough to keep you from self-expression. Or that you’re just a really cheap bastard.

It’s not a complete lack of quality control, it’s a lack of consistent quality control. The optics are consistently good. Yes, I am a really cheap bastard, but for the price of one mediocre non-Communist camera, I have eleven Commie Cameras, and way more fun and adventures!

The soviets succeeded in producing cameras of great design in numbers that far exceeded the numbers of their original designers. Sure, that means that some of them may be a little less precisely manufactured than the Leicas and Contaxes they’re based on, but because of the greater production, many more people wanting access to a very good quality, fully mechanical, fully manual camera can have it. Not to mention the lessons learned about photography gained while trying to use it effectively (it is instructive masochism).
So while communist cameras share many advantages with their more collectable capitalist cousins, they actually surpass the originals in the fact that I can actually use one.
That’s more than a little socialist.
See you all on the first.
