Week 4: Headshots
Week 4 for the Dogwood 52 week challenge is headshots.
In an expected moment of serendipity I had signed up for a beauty shootout organized by Jennifer McIntyre about two months ago and it just happened to line up with my latest assignment.
Jennifer organizes the shootout with the idea of providing portfolio material for photographers, models, makeup artists, hair stylists, and designers. Her focus for these events is beauty photography which is new to me. I’ve worked with glamour models and have done editorial portraiture over the past two years but with those shoots the focus was on the environment and the entire body. I usually don’t shoot close in and the retouching process for doing beauty is quite different than what I’m accustomed to.
The retouching itself has taken a great deal of time as I’m researching techniques while applying them to my work.
Its taking enough time that I’m well behind on the 52 week project. Taking on a large block of work is a great learning tool but it doesn’t give you time to move on to the next thing. The rapid cycle between landscape, portrait, and artistic prompt is proving to be a bit problematic in terms of time management. I may end up taking the weekly projects as prompts rather than trying to follow them on a strict schedule.
